The Brownsville Safety Alliance (BSA) is a radical public safety experiment in which a busy stretch of the Brooklyn neighborhood of Brownsville is flooded with social service resources, and 911 calls are channeled to community violence interrupters instead of police officers.
The initiative is led by Dushoun "Bigga" Almond, a former gang member, who spent more than 13 years in prison for a bank robbery before turning his life around. He leads Brownsville In Violence Out, a street outreach nonprofit focused on stopping gun violence in one of New York's highest crime neighborhoods.
